Desperate Optimists
Film Production Comapny

Filmmakers Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy founded the film production company Desperate Optimists in 1992. Their video and image based work is interested by how, among others things, the structure of narrative is influenced by the inherent structure of the technologies they work with.


Desperate Optimists was the 2004 winner of the UK best film short at the Edinburgh International Film Festival for the film Who Killed Brown Owl . Who Killed Brown Owl is a community project with a difference. Funded by the London Borough of Enfield, and featuring 80 locals young and old, it comprises of just one continuous take.

This film has gone on to win numerous plaudits and has been screened at many International festivals including Rotterdam . Recently, Joe and Christine's film project Civic Life: Moore Street was part of Ireland 's entry into the 2004 Sao Paulo Bienalle.
